09-07-2025, Several leading newspapers and media outlets have covered my recent press briefing in which I expressed serious concern over the Election Commission’s newly issued guidelines for the preparation of the voter roll in Bihar ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. The requirement for residents to present a wide range of documents as part of this process is deeply disturbing and raises apprehensions about the exclusion of genuine voters, particularly from marginalized and minority communities. This approach appears burdensome, lacks transparency, and may inadvertently disenfranchise eligible citizens.
I urge the Election Commission to reconsider and review the implementation of such documentation requirements, keeping in mind the constitutional right to vote and the principles of inclusivity and fairness in a democracy.
